Earthbox: This Planter Really Works

My Earthbox planted with peppers

This might sound like an advertisement, but I really feel this is one of the best growing machines in my backyard. It is called an Earthbox, and while I have always ordered mine online, I have seen them occasionally in local hardware stores around Birmingham. I first saw them at the flower festival at Disney some 15 or so years ago. I ordered one and have been growing my bell peppers in them every year since. A few years ago, I gave both of my sons one, and they use them too. Here is what you do: Once you plant them, and add the fertilizer on top and cover them, all you do all summer is to fill it until the water runs out the overflow. Oh, I almost forgot–I harvest dozens of peppers off the three plants in the box each year from late June until frost. I have a friend that grows bunches of tomatoes in them. And in a display a few years ago, the American Horticultural Society grew a wide assortment of summer and fall vegetables. So yes, I think Earthbox planters are great, and guess what? My 15-year-old planter is still in perfect shape and looks as good as the one I bought a few years ago.

  1. I’m ordering an Earthbox to try it out. I see that some come with dolomite and organic fertilizer. Do you use their fertilizers or something more affordable?
