Checking the local garden centers and big box hardware stores, I was glad the fall annuals are beginning to arrive. While mums may be your plant of choice, there are several annuals that you can purchase and plant now, and they will grow and bloom till frost. My favorites are petunias, dwarf marigolds, and annual salvia (especially the red and blue ones). To get the most out of the plants, I like to put them out as soon as they are available in store. Work your soil well before planting, and I like to plant them a little closer together in the fall vs. how they are generally planted in the Spring. As for fertilization this time of the year, I rely on liquid feeding with a product like Bloom Booster. Remember to keep them watered, as fall can be a very dry season. You will boast with pride when you see them in bloom. These annuals will outshine mums when planted in masses and will last longer, too.
