It is still time to plant a pot of color for summer. And with care and watering, it should be effective until the frost in fall. All the plants shown above should be available at your garden center, but most are selling out of smaller sized annual pots (in this case I am treating lantana as an annual) which I prefer to plant to make sure I get a good root system that is in proportion to the plant size above the ground.
Two things to remember this time of the year if you are starting a new pot. First, the transplant will probably be root bound, and if you do not tear the root system apart, chances are that you will not provide the water to grow into the soil in the pot you have planted it. Second, it is easy to let the plant dry out even if we have afternoon showers like we are having now, especially in full sun. So check the pot daily to see if it is dry.
Single plant pots are the easiest to grow because you do not have to worry about the cultural requirements of another type of plant. If you want a mixed color pot, almost all annuals come in a variety of colors, so choose mixed colors of the same plant if you want that look.
As with any new plant, water in well. Since it is in a container, once the plant starts putting on new foliage, fertilize every two weeks with a liquid solution, keep watered, and I like to mulch the pot if possible to lessen moisture loss. So, go out and add some potted color to your garden.
